Did you have "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in mind while you wrote this? If not, my question probably seems random, but it occurred to me about halfway through reading that there were loads of connections.

Stuart Turton I love that poem, but it wasn't a direct inspiration. That said, it's surprising what your brain subconsciously pulls from when you're writing.
