About ten years ago, I moved to San Francisco, after four years of teaching in Ecuador. I'd just gone through a bad breakup, and faced other such emotional hurdles in California. One day, I had this thought: a hotel to cry in. Hotels fascinate me, with all their potential for secrets, like an emotional waystation. I had no idea how to craft a story out of this concept--it would take some more years to figure that out--but the idea of the hotel itself took root, and then took shape: The Gold Persimmon was born.
