I think Delia Owens' inspiration for the character of Kya may have come from real-life Carol Ruckdeschel, profiled in the book "Untamed" by Will Harlan. She too is an eccentric, self-taught naturalist who for most of her life has lived simply and fiercely independently in the wilderness of the coastal southeast (Georgia), studying nature and collecting shells, etc.. Did anyone read both books and agree?

Krystin Pierce 100% I just finished WTCS and sometimes found myself confused on what book I was reading. So many similarities!
Sarah McDonald I have read both books. The whole time while reading this I thought it sounded just like a fictionalization of Carol Ruckdeschel. Not just with their connections to nature but also with their relationships with other. Jumpin’ is similar to Jesse . And Louis McKee similar to Chase Andrews. And finally make sure they owned a piece of their island and made sure it would stay conserved forever following their deaths.
