I would definitely recommend reading Spin the Dawn first to gain a better understanding. Also, the very ending will only shock you if you've read Spin the Dawn. But that's just a recommendation; you can totally read Six Crimson Cranes without having read the Blood of Stars.

You can definitely read this book without having to read the Blood of stars duology! The books are just in the same world and this will take place in a time before the events of Blood of Stars.
