I've read many of your books but so far my favorite was "Trans-Sister Radio". It give such a unique perspective about transgender people. How did you decide to write on this subject?

Chris Bohjalian A friend of my wife's and mine, a woman, fell in love with a man who told her that he was he was planning on sexual reassignment surgery. This was back in 1998. (I wrote the novel in 1999.) She loved this other person immensely and the two of them tried to maintain the relationship. It failed.

But my novel began as a wistful "what if. . ."

A lot of my novels begin that way and with those two words in my mind: "What if. . ."
