(view spoiler)[Define most recent book. The mostly recently published? The most recently finished and getting ready for publication, the most recently started? Oh what the heck, I'ill answer all three.
I only have one book published as I write this, although I have three with completed first drafts that are nearing being publication ready. A Line is the Sand was inspired by my participation in Firefly Fandom. I got my writing start there, doing short fan fic pieces. One of them seemed to me as if it had the germ of an idea that could be a novel. Nobody was publishing Firefly novels in 2003, so I knew I had to take my idea and convert it to my own universe. It took 17 years and retiring before I managed to finish it, but finish I did.
The one closest to publication is To the Bitter End. It is the sequel to A Line in the Sand, so I guess it is inspired by it. But the events were more inspired by a life of having to overcome trauma and by living on the grounds of a VA hospital as a child and seeing the impact of PTSD on the patients who lived there permanently. It is a novel very much about aftermaths.
As far as the idea for the novel I am working on, Hmm which one? OK, I'll use Society of Widows. I got the idea for that because I am a widow (of sorts, we lived in sin instead of marrying). I know how easily you lose visibility as a widow. How couples no longer invite you, how some friends avoid your company, how hopeless it all seems at times. And most importantly for the book, how you need to reinvent your life. So a book about a secret society of widows who reinvent their lives into by becoming spies, assassins, mages, etc. is being born. (hide spoiler)]
