Goodreads asked Michael Allen:

How do you get inspired to write?

Michael Allen Most of the time, it's in the most annoying way. 'The Deeper Dark' came to me just as I was going to bed for the evening. I had my eyes closed and everything when the beginning and the end came to me. Then, some of the middle parts started to form. I had to force myself awake to take notes as fast I could so that I could get back to sleep.

When I woke up the next morning, I looked over those notes and a fire grew inside of me. I knew I had to put down everything else I was working on and concentrate on that book. So the short version is, ideas just pop into my head and I can't let them go. They grow until they get my undivided attention, and then I can't think about anything else until it's finished.
