If you just want the occasional entertaining bayou-based mystery novel, then no. I've picked around with these but am now reading them in order because the more I read, the more I appreciate and I'm curious to see Burke's development as a writer. However, I've picked around Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series with no regrets. I read him when I want a simple LA crime story. (less)
