Goodreads asked Maddy Barone:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Maddy Barone I think the best thing you can do is to have a web presence. It doesn't need to be a full fledged website. Blogger and Wordpress host free blogs. That means it doesn't cost anything except your time. And if you're going to be a writer, you really ought to budget some time for social media and blogging. You don't have a to write a blog post every day either. Just post little things from time to time. What are you writing right now? What did you do last weekend? Which authors do you like? What books have you read lately?

Then be sure to make (nice) comments on other people's blogs. Most times when you leave a comment you have the opportunity to add your email addy which is private, and your web addy, which isn't. Sometimes people who like your comment will follow the link to your blog. It's a way to make friends.

If you choose to submit to a publisher or agent, I can just about guarantee they will look to see if you have a web presence.
