I had thought about this book since 9/11, but the idea took a long time to mature because I didn't want to write a book where the American war, and terrorism, were front and center. There are other stories to tell. Afghanistan started fading from the headlines, even as the opiate epidemic grew, and that convergence finally seeded the themes and plot for The Opium Prince.
