The answer is kind of boring, but the real truth is I sit down every morning at my computer and task myself with writing at least 1,000 words on my current work-in-progress. Once I do my prep, which means re-reading what I wrote the day before, I sort of "go under" and get in the mood to enter the world of my characters and let them speak to me.
