Actually, Ren isn't alive. In this novel for snakeroot, he's actually a spirit that can still communicate with those that are still alive, and sadly, he can communicate with Bosque Mar. How Ren in the novel explains it, he can only visit the places he has been before he, well, died. From what I also know, only Shay, who is now a permanent wolf in the novel, can see Ren, or at least feel his presence.
