Cat Although the book has elements of magical realism and the whimsical pretense of time travel, the book moreso focuses on a collection of characters dealing with adult relationships (Girlfriend/Boyfriend going abroad for work; Mother/daughter; aging Wife/Husband with dementia; etc) and reflections on those relationships that a middle schooler might find trivial or tedious.
From what I could remember, there wasn't explicit content.
A middle schooler might be able to read it, but whether or not they'd enjoy it, or find it relevant, is another question.
E.Lurie Whether a middle schooler would enjoy this or not probably depends on the individual, but I wouldn't hesitate to give it to a middle schooler or high school student who is a reader. I think it would make a great book for discussion between parent and child.
Kumari de Silva the vocabulary is definitely simple enough for a seventh grader. I would recommend it because it's not as shallow as some YA books are, it addresses issues such as dementia and family estrangement and what 7th grader isn't butting up against at least some of these issues, if not in their own life at least in the life of a friend?
Sarah I agree with Cat - while the premise of the book makes it sound like a fun read for a Middle grades or YA audience, the content is definitely aimed at readers with more life experience. I would recommend other time travel books including "A Wrinkle in Time", "A Traveller in Time" or even H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" over this title for a younger audience.
