In some way, I think he wanted the students to do the Bacchanal, and saw the first murder just as another element of the tragic story he built in his head. But I think Bunny's murder and the fact that the students hid the machinations of it from him offended him personally, that he lost control of the narrative and his characters got 'free will'. Suddenly, it wasn't the same play he had thought-out in the begginning for them, they didn't play the part they were supposed to, and he was disappointed.(less)
