Even though they do explain some of the background of the café I think it's better to read the first one so you have a better understanding of the characters and their relationships.

I actually read this not knowing that there is a book before it. :) And I didn't have any problems reading this at all.

I did not like this collection as it was extremely confusing...so perhaps with some background going into this book it would have helped.
