His ethnicity is definitely up for interpretation, but there's no question that he's mixed race of some sort, and I think the point is he could be anyone/anything.

The book talks about his darkish skin tone, and several other characters ask about his race. He seems to be mixed race, but he doesn't really know his own ancestry.
