It was a violent time in history, in a fairly violent place, so to expect the author to represent it differently to protect the readers sensibilities is silly. It does not"promoting rape" nor " justifying domestic abuse". It tells a story with an accurate representation of the time. If you want flowery love stories these books aren't for you. They are full of adventure, misfortune, sex, romance, with a healthy dose of violence mixed in and they seem to be historically accurate! It kept me on the edge of my seat, but I knew what I was reading and got exactly what I expected. This is my second reading of this book and I enjoyed it much this time as I did the first time I read it!(less)
