In fact the paedophile who attempts to rape young boys is joked about and portrayed as a likeable character. The horrendous abuse Claire suffers at the hands of her husband is justified because rather than continuing to be ignored by the other men they now sexually harass her 'in fun' to show she is accepted because she has been suitably punished. Ultimately the beating and rape she experiences brings her closer to her husband rather than the fear, repulsion and trauma that is the actual experience of victims of this kind of abuse. This book is dangerous because it normalises abuse and celebrates the kind of masculine toxicity that leads to rape culture. (less)
