Can this book be a standalone? I just bought it after being assured it wasn't part of a series......

Paul Yes, this is the first Rebus novel I’ve read and I enjoyed it, but the profusion of names/characters does get a bit overwhelming at times and I suspect that if I’d read more titles in the series it would have been easier.
Alice By now you have probably finished the book or be well into it..... yes it can standalone but of course if you have read other Rebus stories you will know more about each character's personality or quirks . Rankin has written in such a way however, that gives enough depth to each situation so that you don't feel like you have missed something important. I had missed reading a good number of books in the middle of the series but that wasn't a problem either.
