Can I read this as a stand alone to have a taste of the style without being frustrated (open kinda end are fine) or does it end on a cliffhanger or with anything explicitly telling you to pick up the second book ? (Spoiler free please)

Yes, perfectly satisfying as a standalone, in my opinion.
