Big fan sir! Apart from the atmospheric setting and the spookiness, what strikes me most about your writing is the sincerity and fluidity of the character's voices. I marvel at how sincere and honest Tom Ward's voice is. Even when I read your blog, I find the writing easy going and fluid, like a flowing river. Any tips on how to achieve this kind of natural rhythm?

Joseph Delaney Your question is hard to answer because I don't know how I developed my writing style. It happened over many years of practice so I think probably each of us have a natural writing voice within which we have to work at in order to release and then we adapt it for each character.

I have always striven to have a natural informal voice for my characters. As a teacher I liked books which were easy to read out to a class and had good speech patterns. The dialogue was always the best bit. I used to read from 'Kes' - couldn't do the Yorkshire accent but Lancashire was good enough. You soon learned what held the attention of a class. Some books, although literary and acclaimed, simply did not work. When writing dialogue it is a good idea to read it aloud to yourself from time to time.
