You could read this book without having read the previous books, but I would recommend you read the others first.

The thread through the series is his personal life (wife or not, pets, you know) and then there might be things that happened with colleagues.

But it's not that you cannot read and understand this book if you keep in mind that you are reading it without background info on for example Roy Grace's private life. (less)
