I would say yes as the opening of the novel begins with the report about this incident and that's the only way its interlinked back into the story. However, Chambers leaves the blanks to be filled in by the reader who ultimately deciding if Jeans life is full of tragedy or one with a happy ending.

Yes, otherwise why open the book with it. The whole story led to it. He got on a rear car where most of the deaths were. I had forgotten about the opening and was really depressed at the end.
