Goodreads asked L.M. Whitaker:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

L.M. Whitaker I'm enamored with and awed by historical scientists. (Read A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson and see if you are too!)...
While pondering Darwin and his colleagues, 150 years ago, I wondered what have happened if the early discoverers of evolution decide to take matters into their own hands?

In 1869, Sir Francis Galton, ½ cousin to Darwin, hugely contributed to early statistics and many other fields. He also coined the terms Eugenics and Nature versus Nurture. Intro to his Hereditary Genius book...

“it would be quite practicable to produce a highly-gifted race of men… I conclude that each generation has enormous power over the natural gifts of those that follow, and …we owe to humanity to investigate the range of that power, and to exercise it in a way that… shall be most advantageous to future inhabitants of the earth."

Assuming that this happened in secret, and our group became the Guardians of Mankind...how would that manifest itself today? What would the new race of humans look like? To me, clearly nothing so short-sighted as a single race…but rather mixing races by carefully selecting individuals with superior traits.

Next, what would the Guardians think of the way average humans have screwed up the planet? Climate change, draining of the earth’s resources and mass extinction level events. Our secret society still has a long way to go, having had less than 10 generations to perfect humans, when it will take many more. How would they react?
