Ms.pegasus Agree with Lauren, except Maisie Card tries to repurpose the story into a parable about how the past can never be buried and demands reconciliation. I should add that I didn't think this was a very successful effort to immerse the reader in Jamaican folklore.
Sharon Wechsler I agree with the other comments about the this part of the book. The last chapter could have been omitted. In my opinion it took away from the book - instead of savoring the ending, I could not wait for it to be over. The author could have conveyed the same message with a sentence or 2 in the chapter telling about how the 3 little girls disappeared with Bernard.
