I was really confused by the ending with Charlie attacking her & seeming to have gone mad, almost an entirely different dog - does anyone have any theories about this? Is it some kind of metaphor or something?

Mcailin I wonder if he did exist at one time, but she is lamenting him as well? All of the anecdotes of him seem to have a sad undertone.
