If this book were a movie, it would be PG. There is no sex, no drug use, no foul language, and very little violence (none of it particularly graphic). If you'd allow your child to watch, for example, Star Wars, then this book is totally fine.
As for the reading level, it can be really tedious/dry/scientific. But, if a child wants to read it I suppose it's up to them to decide if they like it or not haha!

It's not necessarily unsuitable language wise but large parts of the book can be very tedious to read (Lengthy scientific explanations on how the planet works/could work). The book also features strained human relations which might be difficult to understand for people in their early teens.
