Why exactly does Trampas hate the Virginian? I'm halfway through the book and don't understand Trampas' hostility yet. Possibly because there's not much substance to understand about it.

Mary E. Mathews Trampas hates the Virginian because both have leadership ability, but the Virginian's turns to the honorable and Trampas to evil. In his heart Trampas knows the Virginian as the better man and, as was said in the movie, "He cannot abide it." when the Virginian is elevated above him.
