Kjoatmon
Kjoatmon asked Laurence E. Dahners:

Why are you working so hard to do asteroid mining? At DNA, and I can tell you that they have a solution that would easily get tons to Earth per hour w/o all this effort. They just are not using it. Think 2cm convex lens strips overlapped on bottom of a "broom" to sweep up surface direct to Earth. AI cycles the half circle ports to mine 1 cm deep per cycle. A 3m wide broom does 265 kg an hour at 1 kmh movement.

Laurence E. Dahners Doing it the hard way was in the earlier books. In the most recent ones they are having waldoes pass convex ports over the asteroid, much like you're suggesting.
Great to hear you're giving it so much thought!
