Hello! I've just started reading 'Traitor's Blade' and I just wanted to say thank you for writing exactly the book I need right now. I love the fight scenes in particular - where did you get the inspiration for the Greatcoats' fighting style from?
Sebastien de Castell
Thanks so much for the kind words about Traitor's Blade! As for the fight scenes, I spent a couple of years doing fight choreography for the theatre, and that's a world in which each character's way of fighting has to communicate aspects of their character that have nothing to do with combat itself (for example, Brasti's poor fencing skills reflect a generally lackadaisical approach to the world, Falcio's style reflects how he sees people and situations as puzzles . . . etc).

Hi, Sebastien! The Greatcoats tetralogy has often been discussed as part of the grimdark subgenre. Do you consider those books as grimdark and do you think there's something about "The Greatcoats" that makes it different from the classics (say, Abercrombie's First Law series)?

I'm rereading the Greatcoats series and am currently at Saint's Blood, so forgive me if I got some facts from Tyrant's Throne wrong (don't bother to answer if I did). In Knight's Shadow, Shuran mentions that Saints can't bear children with normal humans yet I remember Ethalia being pregnant with Falcio's child at the end of TT. Does that mean Falcio was Falcio-who-fucking-never-learns, the Saint of Valour, all along?
