No, you don't have to read the first book. There is enough catching up to the plot that it isn't necessary. You might want to read it though, as it was an enjoyable book. But if you read #2, there's no need to go back and read #1.
Sandra Jackson - Alawine
This brings up Camino Island and you'll miss some of the history between the characters if you don't read Camino Island first, but it's a stand alone novel.
