How much research do you complete before you begin writing your books?

Lawrence Wright I have an unfortunate habit of trying to start writing before I'm ready. That means that I haven't done as much research as I need to. I don't comprehend the material sufficiently to explain it to a reader. So I have to go back and do the work. And, when I'm writing, the research goes into another gear because I think of all the things I didn't ask. So I do as much research at that stage as I did in the preliminary research. This all sounds dreary as I'm writing it to you, but missing in my response is the joy I get from talking to people who have much to offer.
