How would you compare writing fiction versus non-fiction? Do you enjoy one over the other? How much research did you conduct to write this new novel?

Lawrence Wright Honestly, I love both forms. They are different, in that fiction and nonfiction have different rules, but they are both forms of storytelling. As is the theater, which I love (I've had seven plays produced), and movies (two). Each provides its own way of communicating a story, but I use very similar techniques in all of them. Research is basic for me. I like to know what really happens.

"The Looming Tower" is one of my favorite books (and a pretty good Hulu series as well). I was astounded by the amount of research that must have gone into it. How long did that take? How does your level of research compare in your non-fiction and fiction works? I just moved to Houston to work at the Chronicle and found "God Save Texas" to be very enlightening. I'm becoming a fan.
