What was your most prized find during your research, the thing you were most excited/amazed/horrified to discover?

Lawrence Wright This isn't exactly the response you might have been asking for. One stop on my research tour was at a submarine base in Kings Bay, Georgia (it plays a role in the novel). I got a tour of one of our formidable nuclear submarines. These "boomers" as they're called can carry 24 intercontinental missiles, enough to wipe out a substantial portion of humanity. The sailors happened to be doing targeting test while I was there, and one asked if I'd like to push the button. Yes, that button. "Are you totally sure it's a test?" I asked. Evidently, we're all still here.
