Lawrence Wright thanks, Cynthia. I did a lot of research on the real history and lore of diseases and disease-fighters. That's all real. Integrating the real and the imagined was part of the challenge in this novel. My imagination is always kindled by knowing how things really work. It's impossible to separate the two.
