Goodreads asked D.M.C. Shaw:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

D.M.C. Shaw My children inspired me to write this book. For example, my son is a maker in the current meaning of the word. He's always building things and making creations and modifications using his 3D printer. My daughters are always making new amazing creations with Lego. So a big part of it was creating a story I thought my children would be excited to read.

Also, I liked toying with the idea of "what if wizards existed in real life, but they used science instead of magic?" The world of The Maker War is built around the idea that anyone, with enough imagination and hard work, could become a technological "wizard" if this kind of ultimate 3D printing technology existed.
