Tripti Dayal asked:

If this book is abridged (sankshipt) which is the complete Mahabharat? I had read this once when I was in class 6. That time I was completely enthralled by the book with its myriads of characters, basic story and the development of different characters. Now I am re-reading it after decades. I have too many questions about various characters and stand taken by them. I am still peeling off the layers.

avahardyam For the complete महाभारत you may refer to गीताप्रेस code 32 book. That's खण्ड 1, out of 6 books. So entire work is huge. (One should also read the harivamsha after स्वर्गारोहण parva)

As for the authencity it is one of the best avalaible now. But a thorough understanding of the bhaarata requires study of the kumbhakoNam recension as well. As for the critical edition, it contains necessarily what is common in all recensions, hence there exists a lot of eliminations, which is NOT the way to establish authenticity.

In English afaik there's the MN dutt and KMG trans.

All the above mentioned are avalaible online in archive.org (except maybe a trans of southern bhaarata) - if there's difficulty with delivery due to recent conditions.
