Goodreads asked Scott Austin Tirrell:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Scott Austin Tirrell When I started the journey of writing Island of Stone, I knew that nature was going to be an essential character. I live in the city now but grew up in a small country town, and part of me yearned for fragrant forests, crystalline waters, and the feel of weather uninhibited. Surrounded by the bustle of people, I also desired a bit of quiet, so isolation would also be a key factor. My previous works have been character-rich and research-heavy. I wanted Island of Stone to be more straightforward with fewer moving parts. There would be just a few characters, with the lead being a tortured soul. What better way to do that then to make Trevor Benton grieving the death of his wife.

The main ingredients were there- a sad man, alone on an isolated island deep in the wilderness. I could have kept it at that, exploring the realms of grief and isolation, but I am not comfortable in the confines of pure literary fiction. I love fantasy, mystery, and the paranormal just too much not to add that spice, so that flavor is certainly there.
