Per the foreword, Stephen King came up with Gwendy and her story, started writing it, but then got stuck midday through, so he abandoned it. A few years later, Richard Chizmar proposed a collaboration, so King, familiar with his short fiction, gave him the beginnings of Gwendy's Button Box and let him finish it. They then worked together to polish it up. When Chizmar later on proposed writing a second novella featuring Gwendy as an adult, King was all for the idea and gave him his blessing to write it. King's only contribution to Gwendy's Magic Feather is the foreword. The novella itself is completely written by Chizmar.
