Ilya Kavalerov I see a few motives: 1. To torture Ivan, since he later tries to make Ivan believe that Ivan's decision to leave was equal to killing his father. He succeeds since Ivan falls ill with a brain fever and has hallucinations (the devil). 2. To kill the master is to hurt all the brothers and get revenge for his own treatment, whom he hates in is heart. Smerdyakov is like the "left-out" brother, supposedly the offspring of Fyodor Pavlovich but gets no inheritance/respect. Dimitri does beat Smerdyakov. And Ivan probably has since he raises a hand to him later. 3. He is insane. He has no logic or and a lot of self hate that comes across in his speech. A lot of what he says could be classified as anti-social. Killing his master is a way to destroy his whole life. He has a self-destructive tendency.
