John Brisbin asked Laurence E. Dahners:

In a time when the modes of entertainment are so constrained, I thank you for continuing to write and publish your enjoyable and thought provoking books. … It is indeed fortunate that writing and even electronic publishing are largely solitary activities in this time when almost all television and film production have ceased. … Will you raise your book prices? ;) …Thanks again for keeping yourself busy,…John Brisbin

Laurence E. Dahners John,

Thanks! I'm always heartened to hear from those who like my stories.

It turns out that there're good data indicating that pricing e-books higher than $3.99 lowers sales enough that both Amazon and the author make less money. Traditional publishers charge more so as not to lose sales of their paper books. I think other authors charge more out of vanity (I suppose - fearing that low prices suggest their work is inferior). But to me, charging more screws over both the reader and the author - I find it hard to believe that so many writers/publishers set their prices so high.
So, I'm planning to keep selling at $3.99.
