Did anyone find that the author kind of... made Ryle seem better than he was? I get the childhood trauma - but abuse and attempted rape is BAD. And I just couldn't empathize with him which it felt like the author wanted us to do. I also found it unbelievable that he was so reasonable until he was attacking her. In real life he'd lose his shit to find Atlas with Lily - even after divorce. Anyone else?

This is because it is from the perception of someone in love with him. The author attempted to make us fall for him just like Lily did so that we would be able to empathize with her and feel her heartbreak as the book progressed. I think this was done not to justify but to elaborate on why Lily struggled to leave him immediately after he hurt her. This is one of the reasons why the book is so good because it enables the reader to understand what Lily went through on a deeper level.(less)
