The names you use in your books -- for characters, places and peoples -- are super strong, very unique and very stylistically you. How and at what point do you go about creating them? What inspires your choices and how do make it all feel like the come from the same world?

I randomly select syllables from objects in my environment -- food labels, book titles, filenames -- and put them together until they sound good. That's about it, lol, nothing fancy.

Hi! I’m a huge fan of your work, and the casual inclusivity and diversity throughout your writing. My question is about taking that first step to put words on paper: how do you get started? I love how fully fleshed your worlds feel, even the ones in your short stories. How do you start? I find I have a lot of stuff swirling around my head, but I have a lot of trouble when it comes to what to do first. Thanks so much!

I just finished devouring the Broken Earth Trilogy, which I received as a gift from my 16y/o...thank you for such an awesome series! Quite simply the best I’ve read in a while. I wanted to ask if you had ever read Melanie Rawn? Your use of the gems/stones and also rings as magic mastery signifiers reminded me of my old fav Dragon Prince series. Just curious. I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of your books!
