Ben Weber asked N.K. Jemisin:

You're one of the few high profile authors I've encountered with their own Patreon and it seems to be a very successful endeavor. What made you decide to launch a Patreon to support your work, and why don't you think more authors take this approach to help fund their writing efforts?

N.K. Jemisin Well, I explained this on my Patreon, but basically I decided to do it because something had to give. I had two full time careers and (at the time) an aging, ill parent. It was either quit my day job (which was the initial reason for me going on Patreon) or, IDK, die young of stress-related illness. -_- Patreon works great if you have an audience, period full stop. If you're a newbie, Patreon will not help you, or at least not that I've seen. But even mid-list authors are generally able to get some support from Patreon. What it comes down to is whether your readers want to see more work from you. If they do, they support. If they've never seen your work, though, you have to do that groundwork first.
