The author in an interview strongly recommends reading them in sequence. And I share her recommendation.

I am reading the second (Talents) without having read the first (Sower), and I am enjoying it immensely.

Speaking for myself... (while I'm sure the others are right).. I found this book as a Kindle Unlimited free read without knowing that it was a sequel and it still had a stunning impact.

I was fortunate to read them in sequence Sower > Talents, and I concur with every one else about reading them in sequence.

Read in sequence, they're really not stand-alone.

I started reading the second without knowing there is a first and struggled a bit (about 1/5 completed). Then I got a copy of the first and, when I finished it, started the second over again. I think you can read one without the other, but I found it so much more interesting to have the background. I think it really enhances reading the second.
