Read in sequence, they're really not stand-alone.

I started reading the second without knowing there is a first and struggled a bit (about 1/5 completed). Then I got a copy of the first and, when I finished it, started the second over again. I think you can read one without the other, but I found it so much more interesting to have the background. I think it really enhances reading the second.
