I love Dark Matter! I actually teach high school English and was considering recommending it to be one of the books the kids read and study. Could you picture your book being taught alongside the "classics"? If you had to introduce your book to a high school student, what would you tell them about it? Do you think it could fit in the high school classroom?
Blake Crouch
I don't think of my books in terms of classics, but I can tell you I have Skyped into many high school classrooms to discuss Dark Matter with students. It works for students the opposite way it works for adults I think. We look back at all the choices we have made and may have regrets. Students are looking at all the possible choices ahead of them and feel quite anxious about it.

Hi Blake! Recursion and Dark Matter were two of the first books I read this year, and I inhaled both in just a couple of days. Loved the suspense and writing style. I look forward to whatever you write next. How old were you when you started writing novels? What would be your biggest piece of advice for someone starting out with writing a novel of their own?

I really enjoyed Dark Matter! I work and am getting a grad degree (not physics) from the University of Chicago. I also lived in Logan Square for 6 years, and Roscoe Village with my friend for a few months when I first moved to Chicago. My question is about the Village Tap. That is in Roscoe Village, not Logan Square! So I presumed you were blending the Roscoe Village Village Tap maybe with Whirl Away on Fullerton?

I love these lines (especially the end) from Dark Matter and wanted to say thanks: “It’s like we get so set in our ways, so entrenched in those grooves. We stop seeing our loved ones for who they are. But tonight, right now, I see you again like the first time we met, when the sound of your voice and your smell was this new country.” Do you use personal analogues to write about emotion?
