Adelina Gădinceanu asked Blake Crouch:

Read “Pines” a while ago and I really enjoyed it! So captivating and creative! I have started writing several stories but I always struggle with the creation of and the development of the characters. Any advice? I feel like I am supposed to give as much details as I can of a character, especially the main one, at the beginning of the story, so as the reader gets an impression/ concrete idea of how she/he is.

Blake Crouch Creating character with depth is very hard. Even with the first drafts of my books (which only a few people read), I find my characters can come across as thin. It's only in subsequent drafts and drilling down into why I'm writing these particular characters, do they start to come fully alive. Hope this helps!
But a quick tip--don't tell us a lot about characters starting out. Show us who they are by their actions.
