The whole point of the relationship that I *think* you're talking about is to raise the question of gender, sexuality, and the ridiculousness of policing those things.

Without going into spoilers, that relationship has elements of a lot that bisexuals (and other LGBTQ members), from the borderline abusive aspects to the truly unique and beautiful aspects. It's about the one character discovering who they are through someone else's love. That that other person is flawed is just a character trait, not a homophobic undertone of the book as a whole.(less)
