Goodreads asked Conway Cates:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Conway Cates If you're doing it for the money, I suggest you mow lawns or shovel snow instead. It can take a year or more to find an agent and another year or more to get published by a major publisher. It better be a REALLY GOOD BOOK and well-edited by a professional for that to happen (unless you're a national celebrity). Self publishing through Amazon and other book selling sites is fairly easy and you can make a little bit of money if you promote yourself well (maybe). Don't spend money to get published with so-called "vanity publishers" unless you like spending money. If you just want printed copies for friends and family, try 48 Hour Books.
