Goodreads asked Daniel S. Stackhouse Jr.:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Daniel S. Stackhouse Jr. "Telephone Diplomacy: The Secret Talks Behind US-Soviet Detente During the Cold War, 1969-1977," has its origins in my doctoral dissertation in history. My research primarily focused on transcripts of telephone conversations between US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the Soviet Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Dobrynin.
